Today I spent some time browsing the net, and stumbled across The International Guild of Realism. It was an exciting find! "Realism" as an art form is by far my favorite, and to me it's definition intertwines with that of the artistic term "trompe l'oeil".
According to the site, the guild was founded by a group of leading professional realism artists from around the globe in 2002 (ok, I'm only five years behind). They do offer a membership, but the requirements are on the strict side, which can be summed up nicely by this quote: "We're not a democratic group that's for anyone with a paint brush. The membership selection process is a cautious process designed to favor those meeting our high standards of technique, talent, and creativity." Ouch! Still, this narrow window of opportunity may make the guild that much more attractive for those of us who like to "window shop" the net for art, as we won't have to weed through the ugly stuff. Come on be honest, some art is just plain bad. If you think you have what it takes, you can read through their membership page for more guidelines and contact information. Don't have what it takes? The guild also offers a number of classes and workshops hosted in various U.S. cities. The website's real attraction, however, is the gallery of art/artists that is displayed on the site. After perusing through the many pages of works, all I could do was pick up my jaw off the floor and wave goodbye to any shred of self worth I had left. Alright, so that statement is a bit dramatic, it's only half true.
